Chargeable weight is the higher rating weight under the booked service's rules
Air freight is commonly rated using the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight. Actual weight is what the packed shipment weighs. Volumetric weight converts the space it occupies into a rating weight.
The basic metric calculation is:
``text volumetric weight (kg) = length (cm) x width (cm) x height (cm) x quantity / volumetric divisor ``
IATA describes dividing cubic centimetres by 6,000 as a general air-cargo rule. DHL Global Forwarding uses the same 6,000 divisor in its published air-freight example. DHL's capability tool and the current FedEx and UPS Australia parcel pages each show a 5,000 divisor in their documented service contexts.
That difference is not a footnote. Confirm the divisor, how dimensions are rounded, whether actual and volumetric weights are compared per piece or across the shipment, how weight is rounded and whether a minimum applies. Without those booked-service rules, your result is provisional.
Collect final packed measurements
Use the cargo as it will be tendered, not product drawings or inner-carton data.
For every distinct package size, record:
- quantity;
- outer length, width and height in centimetres;
- gross weight per package in kilograms;
- whether the package is a carton, crate or palletised unit; and
- the booked carrier, service and origin-destination quote reference.
Measure the furthest outer points, including a pallet, corner protection, bulge or protrusion where the service measures the shipment's bounding box. FedEx Australia's current guidance tells shippers to round each measurement up to the next centimetre for its dimensional calculation. UPS Australia also instructs customers to measure the parcel's longest points and apply its published whole-centimetre rule.
Use gross weight: product plus retail packaging, export carton, pallet or crate and other packed materials included in the tendered piece. A factory's net product weight is not the actual shipment weight.

Calculate one carton step by step
Suppose one final carton measures 60 x 45 x 40 cm and weighs 12.4 kg gross.
At a confirmed divisor of 6,000:
``text cubic volume = 60 x 45 x 40 = 108,000 cm3 volumetric weight = 108,000 / 6,000 = 18.0 kg actual weight = 12.4 kg provisional higher = 18.0 kg ``
At a divisor of 5,000, the same carton has a volumetric weight of 108,000 / 5,000 = 21.6 kg before the service's rounding rule.
Neither number is automatically the invoiced weight. The first belongs to a 6,000 calculation assumption; the second belongs to a 5,000 assumption. The quote or tariff still controls measurement rounding, weight rounding, comparison level and any minimum.
Calculate mixed cartons line by line
Do not use an average carton when sizes or weights differ. Create one line for each distinct packed configuration.
The following fictional shipment uses two carton types. It is OPL analysis, not a customer shipment or rate promise.

Keep the unrounded intermediate values. Round only at the step and increment specified for the booked service.
The same cartons can produce different billable weights
The mixed shipment lets us compare two explicit service assumptions.
Example A: confirmed 6,000 divisor and shipment-total comparison
Suppose a freight-forwarder quote confirms a 6,000 divisor and says to compare total actual weight with total volumetric weight before its final rounding rule:

The result remains 167.625 kg until the quote's stated chargeable-weight rounding or weight break is applied. This is an illustrative booked-method assumption, not a claim that every forwarder aggregates this way.
Example B: current UPS Express Australia parcel rules
UPS Australia's current guidance publishes a 5,000 divisor, rounds both actual and dimensional weight for UPS Express to the next half kilogram, compares those rounded weights for each parcel, and totals the resulting billable parcel weights in a multiple-parcel shipment.
Applied to the same fictional cartons:

multiple-parcel billable total = 176.0 + 36.0 = 212.0 kg ```
The two results differ because the divisor, aggregation level and rounding rule differ. They are not evidence that one provider is cheaper: the services, rates, surcharges, minimums, capacity and transit promise may also differ.
Convert CBM without losing precision
If final shipment volume is already known in cubic metres:

at divisor 6,000: 1,000,000 / 6,000 = 166.666... volumetric kg per m3 at divisor 5,000: 1,000,000 / 5,000 = 200 volumetric kg per m3 ```
For example, 1.275 m3 becomes 212.5 kg at 6,000 before rounding, or 255.0 kg at 5,000 before rounding.
Use the exact divisor from the quote and preserve decimals until the specified rounding stage. Rounding 166.666... to 167 before multiplying by a large CBM figure can create an avoidable reconciliation difference.
Read back five rules before approving the quote
Ask the forwarder or carrier to confirm these fields in writing:

IATA notes that air-cargo rates can be general, promotional, contract or spot/ad hoc. The formula verifies a rating input; it does not verify that two quotations use the same rate basis or charge scope. Use the freight quote line-items guide to normalise the rest of the quotation.
Reconcile the quote after final packing
Run the calculation at least twice: once from the supplier's final packing list before booking approval, and again from the final tendered or carrier-measured data when available.
Check that:
- every distinct carton, crate or pallet has its own line;
- quantities reconcile to the final packing list;
- dimensions are outer packed dimensions in the correct unit;
- gross weights reconcile to scale evidence;
- palletisation or repacking changes are reflected;
- the service name and divisor match the quote;
- rounding is applied in the correct order; and
- the invoiced chargeable weight can be traced back to the carrier or forwarder's measured lines.

What chargeable weight does not prove
A chargeable-weight calculation does not establish:
- dangerous-goods, battery or restricted-cargo acceptance;
- package or pallet suitability for the aircraft and handling system;
- route capacity, booking confirmation or transit time;
- the final freight rate, surcharges or total landed cost; or
- the carrier's final measured weight and invoice.
Treat the calculation as a control: it lets you find missing dimensions, compare the quote's weight basis and ask precise questions before approval. The booked service's current rules and final measured cargo remain authoritative.
